We have been inundated with requests to review upcoming films and as such we decided to make a Top Sci Fi Movies 2017 list!

Our video on this can be found here:

We let everyone pick any number of Sci Fi films that they could find and that are due to be released in 2017 and then we took an office vote on what we looked forward to view. So this list is simply a Office preference list and not some kind of major poll list, even though, we might do one as we do that that system to hand. The Top Sci Fi Movies 2017 list is as follows:

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Written, Produced and Directed by Luc Besson, who you might remember as a producer from the smash hits such as the French film Nikita or The Fifth Element is now in top form and as you can see this film will be equally visually perfect as his other works. Set in the far distant future is follows clow to space and time agents Valerian and Laureline. We don’t know much about the plot as it’s a closely guarded secret but it will be about galactic empires and judging from the trailers video have some serious action in it. Out in July

Ghost in the Shell

film from the Japanese Manga books will be one file to look out for as it seems to capture almost all the cartoon Manga but in a scary dystopian world. The visuals reminds us of not only the Matrix but also of the Fifth Element with colours and costumes far ahead of our time. Directed by Rupert Sanders from the Halo 3: ODST and Snow White and the Huntsman films, and is due to be released in March.

Blade Runner 2049.

The Director Denis Villeneuve with Ridly Scott and Harrison ford back into this movie franchise it is just bound to be good! Ryan Gossling is also here which nails the case selection and could turn this film into the years most epic one! Harrison is back as Rick Deckland and its due out in October

Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 2.

The first film not expectant to be a massive hit, even though they spend a quarter of a billion on the film, was massive hit with Chris Pratt doing dance moves that changed his character forever and now….. they are back. The two strangest character, being Groot and the raccoon Rocket, not previously having a cult following by themselves, are now back and better than ever before, with a massive cult following. Directed again by James Gunn we can expect this one out in May

Star Wars 8,

filming has been reportedly complete and is due out in December. With the sad passing of Carrie Fisher it has been reported that her parts in this episode 8 was completed when she passed which is a great tribute to her and also fantastic for her many fans as we get so see her in her most famous role one last time. There is not a lot released about the plot just yet but it will continue from where The Force Awaken left off and we can’t wait to see it!

Alien: Covenant

the second part from the Prometheus reboot, this one continuing on with Michael Fassbender, as the far to superior Android David, being the survivor that the Colony ship Covenant meets up with on a new and, to begin with, paradise world. Fassbender will also play the other Android in the film caller Walter, and interesting take on this franchise. Directed by the incredible and prolific Ridley Scott this will be released sometime in May.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

This has been 5 years in the making and picking up from where Retribution left off, this could be the final one, but we doubt it. Looking at the trailer videos it will be another hit for this franchise and as we all know a massive hit means more films with higher budgets and more marketing! Paul Andersson is directing with his main flame and wife Milla Jovovich in the lead and we can’t fault this, she is a great actress and fits this role perfectly. Out sometime in January.

War for the Planet of the Apes.

Director Mat Reeves returns to follow this on from that last instalment of the Apes taking over the world, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Reeves has co-authored the script and it pits the Apes against the Humans, or what’s left of them, again. The technical CGI aspect of the films is, as usual, fantastic and it will be interesting to see if they can, yet again, capture that feeling that we’re all doomed. Woody Harrelson also got a staring role here and he is looking good. Scheduled to be released in July

Directed by James Mangold who also directed The Wolverine film and the not so successful but we linked it ‘Knight and Day’ is the third stand alone wolverine feature film with Hugh Jackman yet again exploring the character being wolverine. Patrick Stewart returns as professor X or professor Xavier, and both leads this alternative future saga into it final stage. Expected to be released in March or April.

Wonder Woman.

After she was introduced in Batman Vs Superman she is now back with her own film. This is the first film in an upcoming trilogy that leads her character up to the present time and looks to be as good as expected from a DC film. We have already heard that there are some controversies surrounding this film for example the main character could not be too sexy, which she is in the DC comics, in this film. Does it affect the film we don’t know but can’t wait to see it. Directed by the relatively unknown Patty Jenkins after the original Director Michelle MacLaren (Breaking Bad and Westworld) left the project, out sometime in June.

Transformers – The Last Knight.

Mark Whalberg is back even though he was pretty badly slated in the previous Transformers film Age of Extinction, however, saying that, this movie grossed over a billion dollars world wide so that could be one reason he is back in the lead role. Directed by Michael Bay its main plot is that after the Transformers left to find the creator Optimus Prime is back and this time, time travel and alternative history is thrown into the mix as well. Controversies a plenty here with Mark not being suitable to Nazis winning the second world war. Due to be released at end June

Power Rangers

directed by Dean Isralite, this darker easily more believable Power Ranger version could be a real hit. Its main target audience is teens as it follows the simple ‘teen finds secret alient thing, teens activates the alient things, teens get superpowers, teens does cools things with the superpowers, teens discover deeper meaning, teens saves world’ teen plot. Can’t wait to see it and its due out in March.

SpiderMan - Homecoming.

After Captain America Civil War this is another take on the Spiders Franchise with Robert Downey Jr. as Stark back as a mentor to the spider. Its an interesting aspect and we cant wait to see what it will turn out to be, not sure that’s a given hit but with a strong cast we shall see. Directed by a relative unknown Jon Watts who no doubts needs to leave a mark here we can expect it out in July. And yes there are a few films that have been left out, but, thats due to us not finding them OR they didn’t look particularly enticing to see and got no (null) votes.
