Cannon EOS 5D Mark IV Review

By Mr Steven Right | 01/09/2016 16:59:04

Earlier this year we did a Review of the Cannon 5D Mark III however with the imminent release of the Mark 4 we needed to make sure that we keep our Viewers and Readers informed and up to date about this eagerly anticipated camera.

Its already a best seller on Amazon so that must tell you something!

So whats so good about this Cannon 5D Mark 4?

To start off with must be its new 30.4 Mega pixel sensor and the Dual Pixel Raw which allows for some really exciting modifications of an images. It also now sports 4K video capture but we will come back to this as we see it as a sticking point!

Its already excellent Auto Focus system, 61 points, all selectable.

And now it has a Dual Pixel C-MOS Auto focus which makes Live View shooting and movie capturing Great! This feature allows you to, for example, tap on the touch screen ‘Face Detect + Tracking’ and this camera will not let it out of focus, no matter what you do!

The Display is fantastic, a 3.2 inch 1,620,000 dot display and touchscreen including control over focus selections, its another great point for this camera.

It also comes with secure FTP and standard FTP, wifi enabled, GPS, and it now has IPTC metadata, so you can enter a load of information about your shoot or shoots, which is then imbedded into the image.

Canon has also released two new lenses which gives the camera better usage features, such, as quiet aperture, perfect when you do movies, and, some improvements of the optical design to take full advantage of the new mega pixel sensor

Okay so that’s what makes this camera GREAT but It’s a “camera” camera and what we mean by that is that this camera might not be a Video favourite due to some limiting factors, lets look at them:

The 4K has a 1.64 crop on the sensor which is close to Super 35 but not actual Super 35. It also has no LOG picture profile nothing at all, which is  just odd?

The Video Codex, is Motion JPEG only, which is not a modern codex and you will most probably need to transcode this into another file format type and as such you’ll end up with two files, not only that but Motion JPEG is rather large on files size which does not help.

A 30 min recording limit is still here! Cannon seem to like this for some reason or other? What does this mean, well, if you are doing an interview or some long video shoots, then you will need to stop shooting after 30 min and start again…

No 4K output on the HDMI only HD, which means you can not, and this is a bit weird, pair this with another recording device to film in 4K, it only outputs HD on the HDMI port?

Apart from these video items this is an excellent camera and highly recommended!
